What Skin Changes May Signal Deeper Sun Damage

Living in a city as bright and warm as ours means we spend a lot of time under the Texas sun. At Sunwest Dermatology, Richard A. Cirelli, MD, FAAD, helps people in Houston, TX, understand that the tan or freckles we see today often hide a much more complex story beneath the surface. As an expert in geriatric dermatology, he knows that sun skin damage is cumulative, meaning the exposure you had decades ago is often what shows up as you age. Learning to read the subtle signals your skin is sending can help you catch serious issues early and maintain your skin’s health for years to come.

Texture Changes and Deep Wrinkling

One of the most telling signs of long-term sun skin damage is a change in the actual feel and elasticity of your skin. Over time, UV rays break down the collagen and elastin fibers that keep your skin firm and smooth. This leads to a condition called solar elastosis, where the skin becomes thickened, yellowish, and develops deep, coarse furrows that don't disappear when you relax your face. Unlike natural aging wrinkles, which tend to be fine and thin, sun-induced lines are often much deeper and more permanent. If your skin has started to feel leathery or more like parchment paper, it is a clear sign that the deeper layers have been impacted by UV radiation.

Persistent Redness and Actinic Keratoses

Many people mistake a small, rough patch of skin for a simple dry spot that just won't go away. However, these "rough spots" are often actinic keratoses, which are precancerous growths caused by years of sun skin damage. They usually feel like sandpaper and may be easier to feel than to see. You might also notice thin, red lines on your cheeks or nose, which are actually tiny broken blood vessels called telangiectasias. While they might look like a harmless flush, they indicate that the skin’s support structure has weakened due to chronic sun exposure. These changes are your body's way of alerting you that the skin’s DNA has been affected.

Irregular Pigmentation and Sunspots

While many people call them age spots or liver spots, these flat, brown patches are almost entirely the result of sun skin damage. They appear when the body produces excess melanin to protect itself from further UV harm. While these spots are usually benign, the danger lies in how they can mask more serious changes. If you notice a spot that is growing, has multiple colors, or has blurry edges, it needs a professional look. We pay close attention to these pigmented changes, especially in our older patients, to ensure that what looks like a simple sunspot isn't actually something more concerning like a lentigo maligna.
